Catahoula is a small Cajun Community located on LA 96 not far from St. Martinville (home of  Longfellow's “Evangeline”—a story based on Emmeline Labiche who lost her love following the Cajun's "grand derangement" from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755).  The area is dominated by sugar cane fields.  Catahoula is located not far from the levee of the Atchafalaya Basin, one of the largest swamps in the USA.

Part of the Atchafalaya Basin, Catahoula Lake is not really a lake at all, but a large bayou.

Just one of the many beautiful places along LA 96 highway that you can discover for yourself in Catahoula, LA.

Air boats at Catahoula.  Air boats are able to travel through hyacinth-choked bayous where regular motor boats wouldn't be able to go.  Air boats can also move through very shallow swamps.  An air boat's engine is a regular car engine outfitted with an airplane propeller, and they are extremely loud.

This Oak and Pine Alley, located between Catahoula and St. Martinville, was planted by Charles Durand, a pre-Civil War Sugar Plantation owner.  The Oak and Pine Alley was the scene of a legendary wedding featuring spider webs stretching across the trees, sprinkled with gold dust.

Louisiana is famous for its graveyards located above ground—called "cities of the dead."  The soil in most places is usually too moist for traditional burial.  However, in these places that do permit below
ground burial, the graves are lined with concrete and capped with a concrete slab.  This cemetery is located in St. Martinville.
