Becoming quite a large community itself, located between the cypress swamps and the marshlands which extend to the Gulf of Mexico, this city is named after the Houma Indians.  However, not a single pure-blooded member of the tribe remains, all having interbred with other ethnic groups who settled in Southern Louisiana.  Hence, the Houma Indians do not have their own reservation as other tribes do.  Houma is pronounced "Home-Ah").

On the left is one of the many old fashioned drawbridges found on the bayous in Southern Louisiana.  This one crosses Bayou Caillou near Houma.  The photo on the right pictures Bayou Black along old US 90 near Houma.

A riverboat casino under construction on Bayou Black.  Louisiana has a number of riverboat casinos in operation all over the state, however, many parishes have outlawed landbased gambling and there have been efforts to do-away with the riverboat in previous elections.
