Because of oil and other related industries located here, Morgan City is indeed a melting pot of ethnic groups.  The community is ringed by heavy industry which makes use of  the Intracostal Water Way and the Atchafalya River (once one of the deepest rivers in the world—but now due to flood control efforts, it has to be dredged on a regular basis due to silting).  The city is named for Yankee entrepreneur Charles Morgan who was instrumental in getting a railway built between New Orleans and Morgan City, among other endeavors.  Built on what used to be a cypress swamp, Morgan City now preserves several acres of the original landscape as "The Swamp Gardens".  The town was originally called Brashear.

Seawall
Bridge

The Sea Wall at Morgan City.  Built by the U.S. Corps of Army Engineers in the late 1970’s, the Sea Wall protects Morgan City from the flooding waters of the Atchafalaya River in the spring.  Massive doors that allow access to the wharf and riverfront are closed during these times.  A catwalk was built at the top for pedestrians to enjoy views of the river.

The US 90 Bridge crossing the Atchafalaya River at Morgan City. The Atchafalaya flows out of the Mississippi River to create one of the largest swamps in the United States. It’s an incredible 100 miles long and 20 miles wide.

Bayou Cocodrie
Cypress Swamp

Bayou Cocodrie, located about eight miles east of Morgan City is only accessible by boat.  Cocodrie is French for "alligator" but actually means “crocodile.”

Gator Crossing!

Folks on the west coast normally don't see signs like this where they live.  This caution sign is can be seen along a pedestrian trail in the town of Berwick, located across the river from Morgan City.
